The notion that ‘less is more’ is as old as time, and yet it often bears repeating. This is particularly true during awards season, when red-carpet dwellers pile on all manner of hair, makeup and baubles to make a statement about… being seen. The Grammy’s are an excellent example of doing the most in all the wrong ways. This year’s fashion winners of music’s biggest awards show subscribed to the K.I.S.S principle and dialed down the pomp and circumstance, in exchange for clean lines and understated elegance.
The legendary Annie Lennox showed this generation how it’s done, with a simple black gown that framed her signature platinum pixie. The floor length frock was beautifully balanced with long sleeves and an asymmetrical neckline that added just enough edge without going over the top.
Where has Jennifer Hudson been? Doesn’t matter. She resurfaced for the Grammy’s in a gorgeously simple strapless white dress. The color and clean construction set the stage for polished makeup and a statement lip. Hudson completed the ensemble with an unobtrusive hairstyle and simple thong sandals.
Ahhh Gwen Stefani. She of the platinum locks and signature red lip toned it down for the big show, opting instead for nude polished makeup to set off her embellished jumpsuit. Stefani pull the whole look together with basic black pumps and up-swept hair. No wonder she’s our spirit animal (yes, really. We at SAID Magazine claim Miss LoveAngelMusicBaby. Deal with it).
Actress (we’re not ready to call her a singer just yet) Anna Kendrick kept it simple and (sorta) classy with a time-tested tuxedo get up. She sexed up the potentially boring two-piece with bedroom hair and suggestively smoky makeup.
Jessie J made waves on the red carpet in a gorgeous embellished gown that took the edge off her rock star worthy hair and makeup. The singer/songwriter opted for the bluntest cut and vampy lips for a look that had a nearly vintage feel.
The rock band Haim is poised to make a lasting impression on the music world. They’re off to a great start with clean lines, polished makeup, and ‘devil may care’ hair. The trio stepped out in style for this year’s Grammy’s. And although each member rocked distinctly different outfits, the overall effect was symmetrical and absolutely worthy of the kick-ass girl band that could.
